Pilot Service from Teleglobe Provides Global IPv6 Transit for Ten ISPs in Nine Countries
Pilot Program Enables Customers of These ISPs To Begin Their Ramp of IPv6 Services
HAMILTON, Bermuda--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 2004-- Teleglobe International Holdings Ltd (Nasdaq:TLGB), a leading wholesale international telecom carrier, today announced that in the last six months their pilot IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) global IP Transit service has grown to successfully serve ten customers in nine countries--Algeria, Bahrain, France, Germany, Malaysia, Netherlands, Qatar, Senegal, and South Africa. A number of additional IPv6 customers in these and additional countries are expected as the pilot service expands to become a standard production offering over the next few months.
Teleglobe owns and operates one of the most extensive global telecommunications networks, and is a leading provider of IP Transit to carriers and ISPs around the world. IPv6 is the next generation Internet protocol which is gradually supplementing and expected to replace over time, particularly for new applications, the original and currently dominant protocol for the internet, IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4).
IPv6 was defined by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) to address many limitations of its predecessor, and as it becomes deployed will offer new levels of address range, ease of mobility, flow control, security, and simplified network operation. Early users of IPv6 tend to be education, research and government, but with the integration of mature IPv6 protocol stacks alongside IPv4 in ever-broadening ranges of communications and computing equipment, there are numerous examples suggesting exponential commercial adoption. Many countries in Asia see IPv6 as a means to avoid the complexities IPv4 imposes on their Internet growth, with Japan and Korea for example, targeting full upgrade to IPv6 by the end of the decade. In Europe, the standards body for 3G mobile services (the 3rd Generation Partnership Program or 3GPP) specified IPv6 for 3G all-IP networks. The United States Department of Defense is targeting to complete a transition of all DoD networking to IPv6 by 2008, which will pull a large number of other networks with it.
"Teleglobe provides its customers with superior IPv6 IP transit service through its peering agreements with other early Tier 1 providers who support IPv6," said Yves Poppe, Teleglobe Director of IP Strategy. "Internet Service providers connected to Teleglobe's global network provide reliable, cost-effective global IPv6 connectivity to their early use IPv6 customers and can easily scale as demand grows."
"This worldwide IPv6 service from Teleglobe is another pioneering effort and milestone in the deployment of the New Internet" said Latif Ladid, President of the international IPv6 Forum. "With this offer, IPv6 service becomes equally accessible to both developing and developed economies--there will not be an IPv6 divide."
