When asked about the peace process with the U.S. and Iran, Iranian president Mohammad Khatami said he had no intention of speaking with the United States until they take initiative steps to change their policies toward Iran. He also criticized the U.S. economic embargo against Iran, angered by the American opposition to the construction of a pipeline to transport oil through Iranian territory.
Pakistan pledges bomb testing ban
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, of Pakistan, agreed to sign a treaty banning nuclear testing in Pakistan within the next year. His decision will force India to make the decision of banning nuclear testing or to side with North Korea, the only nation refusing to ban the testing. Sharif stated if India resumed nuclear testing, Pakistan would reconsider its decision to join the treaty.
Lesotho gives South African army rude surprise
Military units from Lesotho, a small country completely surrounded by South Africa, resisted attacks from South African troops who came to Masera, Lesotho's capital, to settle political disputes. The members of Lethoso's units set fire to grasslands before the fighting began, which killed 30.
Police raid bootleg bubbly factory
French police arrested five men for the illegal production of champagne. They were all members of the same family of expert champagne-makers who own a four-acre vineyard nearby. Police are not certain whether the 35,000 bottles of champagne were produced for private consumption or to sell on the streets.
New evidence found in Dar es Salaam bombing
Tanzanian investigators have found the chassis of the vehicle that delivered the bomb to the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam. The chassis was all that remained in the aftermath of the explosion. Investigators suspect the bomb was detonated by remote control.
