DTS & Swedish Radio Present High-Res Live Broadcast in 5.1 Digital Surround

DTS & Swedish Radio Present World's First High Resolution Live Broadcast in 5.1 Digital Surround

Sweden's Popstad Concert Broadcast in DTS 96/24 High Resolution Surround Sound Via Internet & Satellite

    AGOURA HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2004--

Swedish Radio and DTS announce that they have made two more pioneering steps in delivering the highest quality surround sound ever in a live broadcast: First, Swedish Radio is the first broadcaster to utilize DTS 96/24 high resolution digital surround sound for a live event; and second, Swedish Radio proved the capability of offering DTS 96/24 via Internet broadband streaming. These advances come one year after Swedish Radio commenced the world's first broadcast of surround sound via satellite utilizing the scalable DVB-compliant audio technology from DTS. Offering a sample rate double that of standard DVDs, DTS 96/24 offers the highest resolution available to broadcasters.
Originating from the 2004 Popstad Festival in Jonkoping, Sweden on February 13th and 14th, Swedish Radio rocked their listeners with a live 5.1 surround mix uplinked to the Sirius 2 satellite operated by Nordic Satellite AB. The event was also transmitted to the whole of Europe using the EBU Euroradio Network. For the Internet streaming, Swedish Radio delivered the signal to the Sprint backbone for distribution to a limited number of test sites.

"Broadcasting a live show is all about delivering the excitement of the event along with the music," commented Lars Mossberg, Research Engineer at Swedish Radio. "Thanks to the quality of DTS technology, everyone that heard our broadcast was blown away!"

"It may have been the middle of winter in Sweden, but Swedish Radio's engineers really turned up the heat on redefining high resolution audio broadcasting," said Ted Laverty, Director of Business Development for DTS. "The high resolution also proved to be very useful and actually made Swedish death metal sound really good."

The live broadcast expands upon a milestone set last year in which Swedish Radio first implemented a broadcast of DTS 96/24 technology using pre-recorded material at the Audio Engineering Society Conference in Amsterdam.

Programs that Swedish Radio produced, mixed into 5.1 surround sound and encoded with DTS, were first posted on the Swedish Radio Web site in early 2003. While the pioneering broadcasts to date have been primarily a proof of concept of the technology and production processes required to deliver high quality digital surround sound, up until now there have been more than four million downloads of these files on Swedish Radio's Web site: www.sr.se/multikanal.
